What to Know About Black Friday 2020

Like most everything in 2020, Thanksgiving weekend sales will be quite different this year, including Black Friday.

As COVID-19 continues to shake up the retail industry, several stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Footlocker, Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods are among the companies that have already made announcements that they will dim their lights on Thanksgiving and give employees the holiday off. In addition to retailers, malls too could potentially be closed on Turkey Day. Earlier this month, CBL Properties, which owns 108 malls across the country announced that its locations would be closed on Thanksgiving.

While it’s too soon to tell what deals will be offered for Black Friday 2020 just yet, shoppers can expect the usual set of online deals. In recent years, retailers have hosted online sales in addition to discounts at brick-and-mortar stores during the Friday after Thanksgiving. Some retailers, such as Target, might even start up holiday shopping deals a month earlier in October.

When is Black Friday 2020?

Black Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving. This year, the annual shopping day falls on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020.

Stores are known to start sales early in the morning on Black Friday. Other retailers start sales on Turkey Day itself. Specific sale start times for stores have not been released yet.

In previous years, Thanksgiving sales typically last for a week after the initial Black Friday start date. Even with annual in-person shopping sales up in the air, we expect retailers to still host sales for a few days after Thanksgiving weekend. Some retailers may even extend targeted end-of-November sales due to the coronavirus pandemic and concerns over social distancing, while others may even offer Black Friday-like deals earlier than ever this year. For example, Target announced it will launch holiday deals in-store and online in October.

What Deals Can I Expect from Black Friday 2020?

While deals for Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday haven’t been revealed quite yet, last year shoppers could find discounts on several items online, including shoes for less. In 2019, Black Friday deals included Nike adding an extra 50% off to clearance items, Sarah Flint letting shoppers score with bundle deals and Old Navy offering $1 socks. In the meantime, here are some other great deals you can shop now:

  • Nike: Get up to 40% off the latest sale styles.
  • Sarah Flint: Get 30% off select sandals, pumps and more.
  • Old Navy: Get 1,000 of deals sitewide, including select styles starting at just $5.

  • Kohl’s: Shoppers can check out Kohl’s current clearance sale, which offers 50% off on select items.
  • Dick’s: Get up to 25% off with Dick’s Sporting Good’s Back to School Sale happening now.
  • Target: Shoppers can check out Target’s current sale, which offers 50% off.

What Stores Will Be Closed on Thanksgiving?

Several retailers will be closing their doors on Thanksgiving and letting their employees take the holiday off as COVID-19 continues to impact traditions in retail. Companies that have announced that they will close stores on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020 include: Walmart, Target, Footlocker, Kohl’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Several who are closing for Thanksgiving have announced that they will still host online sales for shoppers to partake in online.

What Deals Can I Expect from Cyber Monday 2020?

Retailers offered special deals to shoppers for Cyber Monday 2019. Amazon, Bloomingdales and Zappos were among the stores offering customers Monday deals.

Cyber Monday deals are also too soon to tell, but sales from retailers will likely fall on the Monday after Thanksgiving. This year, Cyber Monday is projected to fall on Nov. 30, 2020. The e-commerce sale was traditionally one of the biggest shopping holidays of the year, but with COVID-19 changing the course, it will be interesting to think about how retailers will lure customers this year.
